Dr. Edmund Stoiber

1996
The idea to establish the Bavarian EliteAcademy is born within the scientific and technical advisory committee of the Bavarian State Government, with the special support of Prof. Dr. Franz Mayinger, at that time professor for thermo dynamics at the Technical University Munich, and by Maximilian Ardelt, at that time Chairman of the Board of VIAG AG. The Bavarian Prime Minister Dr. Edmund Stoiber and numerous other friends and sponsors decisively support and promote the realization of the concept.


1998
The Bavarian EliteAcademy is established as a foundation under civil law. Among the outstanding founding donors are VIAG AG and the Association of the Bavarian Metal and Electrical Industry (Senator h. c. Hubert Stärker). The Chairmen of the Supervisory Board, Dr. Jochen Holzer (VIAG AG), Dr. Hermann Franz (Siemens AG), and Dr. Eberhard von Kuehnheim (BMW AG), support the acquisition of (the) financial resources. The foundation’s initial capital stock consists of approximately 15 million DM. Furthermore, the foundation has a confirmed additional sum of 16 million DM in donations. Together, these assets secure the operation of the Academy for the first years. Dr. Hermann Franz, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Siemens AG is elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the foundation, Dr. Wolfgang Zeitler is founding Director, and Prof. Dr. Franz Mayinger the first Academic Director.


1999
The Bavarian EliteAcademy starts its program with 14 students at the Academy of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Feldkirchen-Westerham. The program is continued with 17 students the following year.


2000
The first generation of participants completes the program. Dr. Hermann Franz, Chairmen of the Board of Trustees of the foundation, awards final certificates during the festivities in the dome hall of the Bavarian State Chancellery together with Dr. Edmund Stoiber, at that time Bavarian Prime Minister.

The students of the Bavarian EliteAcademy present their team projects dealing with “Mobility and Traffic Volume in the 21st Century” during the Expo 2000.


2001
The Alumni Association of the Bavarian EliteAcademy is established.

The scientific publisher “Springer” publishes the results of the team projects (Franz Mayinger (Ed.): Mobility and Traffic in the 21st Century, ISBN 3-540-51612-9, Springer).


2002
The first summer festivities of the Bavarian EliteAcademy take place at the Museum of Phantasy (Museum Buchheim) in Bernried near Lake Starnberg.


2003
Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Franz Durst (Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg) and Prof. Dr. Dieter Frey (Ludwig Maximilian University Munich) succeed Prof. Dr. Franz Mayinger as Academic Directors.

For the first time the “Golden Signet” is given to a person who has done great service to the Bavarian EliteAcademy: Dr. Jochen Holzer receives the award on the occasion of the 5-year celebration in the Museum of Phantasy (Museum Buchheim) in Bernried near Lake Starnberg.

As part of the certificate awarding ceremony in the Bavarian State Chancellery Sr. Hermann Fran, Dr. Eberhard Kuehnheim, and Senator h. c. Hubert Stärker receive the “Golden Signet” of the Bavarian EliteAcademy.

Dr. Dieter Soltmann, Honorary President of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Munich and Upper Bavaria is elected as new Chair of the Board of Trustees. He succeeds the first Chair of the Board of Trustees of the foundation, Dr. Hermann Franz.


2004

On the occasion of the certificate awarding ceremony in the Bavarian State Chancellery, Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Simson receives the “Golden Signet” of the Bavarian EliteAcademy. Dr. Christine Hagen succeeds Dr. Wolfgang Zeitler as Managing Director of the Bavarian EliteAcademy.


2005
“Der Studentenspiegel”, a joint initiative of AOL, MacKinsey & Company, and Der Spiegel awards the EliteAcademy’s selection procedure as the best of all evaluated scholarship-providing institutions.

The number of applications increases. Jurors of the Bavarian EliteAcademy select the students for the 6th year from over 260 applicants.


2006
Hartmut Geldmacher, member of the Managing Committee of E.ON Energy AG, is elected as new Chair of the Board of Trustees.

Ralf Edl from FH Ingolstadt is admitted to the 8th year of the program as the first student from a university of applied sciences. 


2007
The 9th year of the Academy’s program starts with 38 students from all over Bavaria – the hitherto largest number of participants.



2008
With the implementation of the Bachelor and Master university programs, the EliteAcademy consolidates its own program from four to three training phases. An excursion to Brussels is introduced to internationalize the curriculum.

Dr. Thomas Wellenhofer succeeds Dr. Christine Hagen as Managing Director of the Bavarian EliteAcademy.

On July 11 the 10-year celebration and the traditional summer festivities take place at E.ON Energy in Munich. The speakers are the former Federal President of Germany Prof. Dr. Roman Herzog and the Bavarian Prime Minister Dr. Günther Beckstein.

The student ideas competition “GenerationD” is established by the Bavarian EliteAcademy, Allianz, Süddeutsche Zeitung, and the Market Economy Foundation.


2009
The students of the Bavarian EliteAcademy visit China during the first non-European study trip in 2009. The trip includes visits to Peking, Qingdao, Nanzhanglou, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong. The students visit branches of sponsoring firms in China, Chinese corporations, universities, as well as various authorities and educational institutions. A preparatory seminar for the China Academy is held in cooperation with the Hanns Seidel Foundation in Wildbad Kreuth.

The Board of the Siegfried and Sigrid Siegmund Foundation forms a close cooperation with the Bavarian EliteAcademy. The return on capital of the foundation is henceforth given entirely to the Bavarian EliteAcademy.

On occasion of the certificate awarding ceremony in the Bavarian State Chancellery Dr. Dieter Soltmann, Honorary President of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, receives the “Golden Signet” of the Bavarian EliteAcademy.

2010
The Bavarian EliteAcademy is awarded as “Chosen Place 2010” in the innovation competition “Germany – Land of Ideas.” On February 16, Stephan Jungenheimer from Deutsche Bank presents the award to the Managing Director of the Bavarian EliteAcademy Dr. Thomas Wellenhofer.

The students of the 11th year of the Academy travel for a study trip to China at the end of their training. The trip takes the students to Peking, Qingdao, and Shanghai.


2011
Prof. Dr. Anna Reichlmayr-Lais is appointed new Academic Director and Member of the Board of Trustees of the Bavarian EliteAcademy on January 1.

The students of the 12th year visit India on their annual study trip. The students visit Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Singapore. They visit branches of Allianz, Deutsche Bank, Linde, Schaeffler, and Siemens.


2012
The Bavarian EliteAcademy celebrates an unprecedented high number of applicants. The number of applications for the 30 scholarships has doubled from 409 in the previous year to 856 for the coming year.

On their trip to Brussels the students of the Academy’s 13th year visit the permanent representation of Germany, the representation of Bavaria, and the NATO Headquarters.

To date, more than 400 scholars have successfully attended the program of the Bavarian EliteAcademy. 30 to 35 new scholars are accepted every year.
